Our client found themselves subject to VAT HMRC tax investigation conducted by HMRC. This investigation was initiated due to significant VAT arrears and the absence of multiple VAT returns.
HMRC had identified undisclosed transactions, primarily because of the missing VAT returns. The tax investigations had escalated into a more advanced investigation due to our client's failure to address it appropriately.
HMRC were aware of certain transactions that had not been declared, mainly due to missing VAT returns. Because the matter had not been dealt with properly by our client, it had escalated into a more advanced investigation.
We advised (and convinced) our client that making a full disclosure would avoid the tax investigation getting out of control and would hopefully lead to a reasonable settlement.
We acted as intermediary between HMRC and the client and ironed out the issues that had so far prevented any meaningful progress. The main issues that had caused HMRC to escalate matters turned out to be small matters and we quickly brought our clients returns up to date, enabling HMRC to scale their investigation back.
By acting swiftly, making full disclosures, and cooperating with HMRC, we were able to resolve a complex VAT investigation and protect our client from severe financial and legal consequences. If you find yourself in a situation similar to this case please contact us.
