“No day in VAT is ever the same!”

Life before ETC

Laura qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser with the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) in 2011 and has over 15 years experience working in VAT. Working with a broad spectrum of businesses, ranging from sole practitioners to large multinationals, as well as charities and not-for profit organisations, has broadened her professional experience and given Laura exposure to a wide range of different VAT issues across industry sectors.

Laura advises on all aspects of VAT, with a particular interest in land and property, as well as working with accountants and solicitors, utilising her experience to provide practical solutions to their clients’ problems. Laura has represented clients at both the First Tier Tax Tribunal and through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) with HMRC.

Why a career in tax?

Alongside the opportunity to work with a variety of clients, I enjoy the problem solving and analytical skills required to deal with the challenges in the world of tax, as well as the ability to make a difference in the financial lives of individuals and businesses.

My best (and worst) bits

I enjoy meeting new people and the variety and creativity that the role brings. Thinking on your feet is essential in the role. Asking the right questions and carefully considering the answers helps apply VAT law to any given situation. No day in VAT is ever the same!

VAT is a complex and constantly evolving tax and reaching an ‘on balance’ decision can require a lot of research and deliberation, and this doesn’t get easier as the tax increases in complexity.
