Apprentice Tax Adviser (36 months)
Salary: National living wage
Start Date: From 15th Sept (or convenient date to be mutually agreed thereafter)
Location: Office Based, Altrincham, WA14 4DW
We are looking for a school leaver, a graduate, or a career-changer who is serious about building a long-term career in tax.
As a Tax Apprentice, you will be enrolled on the Level 7 ATT-CTA Pathway, gaining hands-on experience while studying towards your Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualifications followed by the Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) exams.
You’ll work closely with experienced tax professionals, developing technical expertise and practical experience through real client work from day one.

Key Responsibilities:
- Supporting senior tax advisors in delivering tax planning and advisory reports
- Assisting with the preparation of tax returns for individuals with complex tax needs
- Researching tax legislation and case law to provide technical support to more senior team members and clients
- Communicating regularly with clients and keeping them informed of progress
- Helping produce content for our website and social media accounts
- Starting to build strong professional relationships

This is a purely tax advisory role. You will work alongside the directors and associate directors, with the support of other fee earners, advising a diverse client base on their complex tax affairs. In addition, you will take an active role in business development, as well as being involved in other networking and client events.
You should be CTA qualified, with at least 3 years’ experience, probably gained in a large or mid-tier accountancy firm. You should have direct experience of advising SMEs, OMBs; and/or private clients (including HNWI and entrepreneurs), whether with a personal or corporate tax focus.
You will be able to demonstrate an appetite for learning and a willingness to take on a variety of technical challenges.
Excellent client facing and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to write clearly and concisely. Whilst sound technical experience is a pre-requisite, the right attitude and outlook is equally as important. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate drive and ambition to succeed, commitment to good client service, and a proactive and enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude.
Advising both professional services clients and private clients in relation to their clients/their own complex tax affairs;
- Responsibility for client relationships;
- Attending client meetings;
- Producing technical reports and proposals;
- Producing blogs and content for newsletters;
- Attending networking events and seminars

You will be responsible for identifying opportunities to promote and grow the ETC brand through a variety of medium, as well as in direct contact with prospective clients. The role will also involve promoting the firm online via webinars, newsletters, blogs and social media.You will have a good understanding of tax and will likely be ATT or CTA qualified; although other tax qualifications will be considered.
You will be able to demonstrate previous business development experience, although, this experience does not necessarily have to have been gained in a specific BD role. However, the ability to think on your feet, and to be proactive in finding and developing new business.
Finally, as well as a solid understanding of tax, the right candidate will have excellent communication skills, and a high standard of written English; but, above all else, a positive and proactive attitude is the key to long-term success in this role.
- Identifying opportunities for BD within target markets, as well as professional networks and the wider business community;
- Identifying prospective clients and generating new leads;
- Meeting with prospective and existing professional clients to promote ETC;
- Taking the lead in marketing campaigns and events;
- Assisting the Technical Director in producing material for webinars, seminars, blogs, newsletters and the company website;
- Evaluating and reporting on the effectiveness of business development and marketing activities;
- Representing the firm at local and national business networking events, seminars and exhibitions, as appropriate.
