Life before ETC
I have had a long and varied career in tax. After starting with HMRC I have subsequently, amongst other things, held senior positions with national firms as well as running my own successful tax disputes practice.
Why a career in tax?
Completely by accident! I started with HMRC as a 17 year old filing clerk as a temporary stop gap before my inevitable rise to rock stardom! That didn’t happen, but a few promotions did, and I came to love the daily intellectual challenges of a career in taxation.
My best (and worst) bits
I am told that I am a good communicator. I take great pleasure in breaking down complex concepts to make them understandable to the layperson. Apparently, I am also good at providing reassurance to clients who find themselves in a difficult situation with HMRC.
I can be impatient. Especially with HMRC caseworkers who have made up their minds on a matter without properly considering, or even looking for, the evidence.

Alternative career choice
I have the best of both worlds. I never did become a rock star, but I have had a parallel career as a musician, songwriter and recording artist which has, and continues to be, a rewarding counter balance to the day job.
