Pro Bono
Pro bono is a Latin phrase for professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment.
Unlike volunteering the idea is that a pro bono service draws on the specific skills of professionals to provide services to those who are unable to afford them.
Most of our pro-bono assignments involved assisting those who are in dispute with HMRC, and we have completed a number of pro-bono assignments, including
• Assisting a group of 21 taxpayers who were the victims of fraud, and against whom HMRC was asserting that a double SDLT liability had arisen on a single ‘real world’ transaction.
• Assisting a group of 7 taxpayers against whom HMRC had issued penalties for failing to produce information which the taxpayer did not have nor could obtain.
• Assisting a number of contractors who were at threat of bankruptcy from the controversial ‘loan charge’.
• Assisting a vulnerable person in dealing with a assessment to income tax in relation to rental income on a buy-to-let property
